Why gaps fuel suspicion
Official records are central to any crash investigation. A conventional aircraft accident, military recovery operation or scientific retrieval effort normally leaves traces in archives: messages, reports, transport logs, inventories, photographs and administrative correspondence. Several factors make missing records particularly powerful in UFO debates:

Why Roswell remains a records dispute
Roswell illustrates a recurring pattern in UFO crash narratives:
- An event is reported.
- Expected records are found to be incomplete.
- The missing documentation becomes part of the story.

Witnesses reported a fireball crossing the sky and stories later emerged that military personnel recovered an unusual object from woods near Kecksburg. Decades afterward, attention increasingly focused on government records rather than physical artefacts.

The strongest lesson from Roswell, Kecksburg and similar cases is that missing records have evidential value, but limited evidential power.
A gap in documentation can support several possibilities:

- Deliberate concealment.
- Creation of fewer records than later observers assume.
The problem is that the gap itself rarely distinguishes among these explanations.
From an evidential standpoint, proving a cover-up requires more than demonstrating that files are absent. Why missing files remain part of crash-site memory
Crash sites function not only as places where something may have happened, but also as places where questions remain unresolved. Missing records contribute to that role because they leave room for competing narratives.
For believers, absent files can appear to be the last missing piece of a hidden story. For sceptics, they are reminders that historical archives are incomplete and often messier than popular imagination assumes. Either way, the documentary gap becomes part of the site’s identity.
That is why discussions of Roswell, Kecksburg and other alleged UFO crashes often return to archives, inventories and filing systems. The missing records matter because they shape how the events are remembered. What they do not do, by themselves, is prove that alien wreckage was ever recovered. The gap may justify further questions, but it cannot substitute for the evidence that the missing records are presumed to contain.
