The contemporary record from 1947 is strikingly narrower than the Roswell story familiar today. Early military and FBI documents describe the recovery of debris that officials ultimately associated with a balloon and radar-reflector system. The appearance of alien bodies

Why Later Richness Is Not Stronger Proof
A common mistake in evaluating Roswell is to assume that more details automatically mean stronger evidence. Historically, the opposite can occur. A story told forty years after an event will often contain more names, locations and dramatic scenes than a story told immediately afterward, regardless of whether those additions are accurate.
Roswell demonstrates this clearly. The most elaborate claims—alien bodies, multiple crash sites, living extraterrestrials and advanced materials—generally appeared decades after the incident rather than in the earliest surviving records. This does not automatically disprove every later witness. Some witnesses may have sincerely reported what they believed they saw or heard. The key historical point is that chronology matters. A claim first documented in 1947 and a claim first documented in 1980 do not carry the same evidential weight simply because both are associated with Roswell.
